Moscow police on Saturday detained two women attempting to hold an unsanctioned Gay Pride demonstration.

According to the AP, the demonstration took place across from the Moscow mayor’s office.
Reuters reported that other activists drove by the mayor’s office waving rainbow flags. Some of the protesters were dressed as Eurovision Song Contest winner and Austrian drag queen Conchita Wurst.

Moscow authorities have denied gay groups’ applications for permission to hold rallies for nine consecutive years. Last year, Russian lawmakers approved a law banning the promotion of “gay propaganda” to minors, which targets any public demonstration of support for LGBT rights.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has defended the law as necessary to protect children.

President Barack Obama will headline a major Democratic National Convention (DNC) LGBT gala in New York in June.

The June 17 fundraiser will take place at New York’s Gotham Hall. DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz will also attend the event.
On the same day, the president will also attend a DNC event hosted by Vogue editor Anna Wintour, a strong supporter of LGBT rights.

“Under the President, we have seen more progress for our community than under any other administration in U.S. history,” DNC officials wrote.
“From hospital visitation rights, to workplace protections for transgender federal employees, to supporting marriage equality, we have so much to be proud of – and so much at stake in 2014.”
