Estremoz is a modest town in central Portugal with a population of about 15,000. The area has seen human habitation since pre-historic times. Over the centuries various conquering armies and of  Romans, Visigoths , Moors and Muslims have occupied  the land at various time. All are gone now and a modern republic of Portugal has coalesced there since the 13th century. Estremoz is internationally known for its multi-colored marble strains. There is so much marble around Estremoz that it is used everywhere; even the doorsteps, pavements and the cobble stones are made out of marble. It has an everyday life with cafes, small hotels, a central common, a military cavalry outpost and a restored castle that’s now a luxury hotel.
