Heterosexist machismo and rigid Catholic anti-gay attitudes prevail over most of Central America. There is little breathing room for expression by LGBT citizens. In Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador--all the countries of Central America--homosexuality is legal as of 2008. But these are mere technicalities for most people and the vast majority do not like the presence of same-sex people among them. It will take generations to shift away from their resentments toward more tolerant and accepting thinking. But meanwhile, like moths dancing around a flame, in every country there are activists pushing for reform and there are gay venues and events that keep the flame of hope alive.
