Chad, Africa


Due to its distance from the sea and its largely desert climate, Chad is sometimes referred to as the "Dead Heart of Africa". The country is one of the poorest and most corrupt countries in the world; most Chadians live in poverty as subsistence herders and farmers. Since 2003 crude oil has become the country's primary source of export earnings, superseding the traditional cotton industry. There is no sodomy law in Chad. Homosexual acts are legal in Chad according to the Penal Code of 1967. Article 272 sets the age of consent for homosexual acts of both sexes to 21 years. There is no legal protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Chad also is off putting to visitors because of its high cost of living. Child trafficking for sexual and other exploitation remains a major concern about Chad.
