Kenya
has been among Africa's economic and political 'successes' since
independence in 1963. Nairobi is
one of the continent's premier cities. I arrived two days after the national
presidential elections on December 27, 2008. The results were angrily
disputed and riots broke out all over the country. Some of the images
(Nairobi
Gallery 1, #40-52) reveal the bad news and the presence of riot
police on the streets
of Nairobi.
From January to April the violence caused about 1500 deaths nationwide
and displaced hundreds of thousands of people. Four months after
the elections,
the political rivals finally settled on how to share power in an unfriendly
coalition government.

North photo galleries to see the after-effects
of the riots in the slums near Nairobi.
The images in this gallery portray a city at peace and experiencing relative prosperity.
